Your company complies with all necessary safety regulations. You have a business emergency plan. You have evacuation maps/pictographs displayed in various places, you also have sufficient and good fire extinguishers in your building and several staff members have an ERO diploma.
Then you ask yourself the question: “Do these investments actually work if a disaster occurs?”
That is why FireRed Safety offers you an evacuation drill. During this exercise you will gain insight into:
- The response during an alarm in your building.
- Shortcomings in your business emergency plan (prevention, etc.)
- Actions of emergency response officers (EROs) and employees

How often should you conduct an evacuation drill?
The NEN 4000 indicates the following: “An important part of an ERO-organization is carrying out exercises, at least once a year, and more often if the RA&E or important changes in the organization give reason to do so.” The evacuation drill is made mandatory with a certified/mandatory evacuation plan.
One of the purposes of conducting exercises is to assess the extent to which emergency response organization functions in practice and is competent. Evaluation after an exercise with all those involved is necessary in order to improve. The starting point of exercises is to tailor the emergency response organization to its tasks and to improve where necessary, to be better prepared for realistic incidents/calamities and the panic that unexpectedly arises.
Some phases of a step-by-step plan for an evacuation exercise (in difficulty):
Phase 1: The staff is informed about the day and time. Checking the emergency response evacuation plan in practice.
Phase 2: The staff is informed about the day or week (no time).
Phase 3: The staff is not informed. Realistic training with smoke machine and Lotus victims.
Phase 4: The staff is not informed and the exercise is complex. With possibly also a fire brigade visit.
Procedure
An initial agreement is made with the client about the implementation of the exercise and preliminary discussion with the alarm organization Fire Alarm System (BMI) / emergency response organization / possible deployment of local external emergency services.
