Inspection and maintenance – Fire-resistant penetrations

Fire-resistant penetrations are an essential part of passive fire protection in buildings. They ensure that fire and smoke do not spread uncontrollably through a building during a fire, thereby safeguarding people’s safety and minimizing damage.

Compartmentalization
Compartmentalization is a technique in which a building is divided into separate fire compartments. Each compartment is designed to contain a fire for a specific duration, such as 30, 60, or 120 minutes. This is achieved through the use of fire-resistant walls, ceilings, and floors. These physical barriers slow the spread of fire and smoke, giving occupants more time to evacuate and allowing firefighters to intervene effectively.

To maintain the integrity of these compartments, it is crucial that penetrations for pipes, cables, and ventilation systems are properly sealed with fire-resistant solutions.

Fire-Resistant Penetrations
Penetrations are unavoidable in any building, such as those for electrical cables, water pipes, or ventilation ducts. Without proper measures, these openings create weak points in fire compartmentalization. To address this, various fire-resistant products and techniques are employed:

  • Fire Dampers: Installed in ventilation ducts, fire dampers automatically close upon heat detection. They prevent smoke and fire from traveling to other compartments via air channels, which is especially crucial in large buildings with extensive ventilation systems.
  • Fire Screens: These durable, heat-resistant barriers are used to completely seal or protect openings. Fire screens provide a physical separation and are ideal for larger penetrations or access points.
  • Fire-Resistant Boards and Sealants: These materials are used to seal small gaps around pipes and cables. They maintain the fire-resistant properties of walls and floors, even when installations are modified.

Importance of Inspection and Maintenance
To ensure that compartmentalization and penetrations retain their fire-resistant function, annual maintenance and inspection are essential. These should be conducted by certified specialists according to applicable standards, such as NEN 6075, NEN-EN 6069, NEN-EN 6068 for compartmentalization, and specific product standards like NEN-EN 1366, NEN-EN 1364-1 to NEN-EN 1364-4, NEN-EN 1365-1 to NEN-EN 1365-4, NEN-EN 1366-1 to NEN-EN 1366-3, etc.

During an inspection, the following are assessed:

  • The condition of the fire-resistant materials.
  • Proper installation and sealing of penetrations.
  • The functionality of mechanical components, such as fire dampers.
  • Modifications to pipes or cables that might compromise compartmentalization integrity.
