Maintenance and servicing – Fire Protection – dry riser pipes

Voorbeeld Hydrant

A dry riser is a steel pipe, often visible on the exterior of a building, resembling a rainwater downpipe. While it may appear inconspicuous or even somewhat “unsightly,” it plays a crucial role in fire safety. The system allows the fire brigade to quickly and efficiently transport water to any hydrant on the riser without wasting valuable time unrolling hoses. This makes a dry riser indispensable in certain situations, such as high-rise buildings, expansive complexes, or locations with limited access for fire engines.

According to the NEN 1594-2006 standard, a dry riser must be inspected periodically. Annual maintenance ensures that the system remains operational, while every five years, it must undergo hydrostatic pressure testing to verify its water pressure resistance. These tests ensure that the riser can function uninterrupted for at least one hour during a fire.

A visual inspection of components such as the CC fitting, J fitting, hydrants, wall boxes, and signage is a standard part of the inspection. This ensures that the entire installation, including its protective and supporting elements, is in good condition.

Dry risers are mandatory in buildings where the highest floor level is 20 meters or higher, in expansive buildings, buildings with limited accessibility for fire engines, or if there is no hydrant within 40 meters.
