Occupational Health and Safety Act

The Occupational Health and Safety Act (Arbowet) is a law that most people have heard of. The purpose of the Occupational Health and Safety Act is to ensure that working conditions for all employers in the Netherlands, regardless of the number of employees, are equivalent. Additionally, it serves as a guideline for businesses to provide safety in the workplace.

The law consists of the occupational health and safety decision (arbobesluit), the occupational health and safety regulation (arboregeling), and the occupational health and safety policy rules (arbobeleidsregels). The arbobesluit contains regulations for a sound occupational health and safety policy. The arboregeling specifies regulations for specific topics. The arbobeleidsregels provide guidelines for the implementation of the law.

Due to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, there is a requirement for training and education, such as the Company Emergency Response (BHV) training, and strict rules to follow. More information…

Responsibility
Employers are primarily responsible for the working conditions in their company. Employers and employees work together to improve working conditions, with advice from the Occupational Health Service (Arbodienst). The Labour Inspectorate oversees employers’ compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
