ERO Organisation

Appointing a company emergency response officer helps to increase safety in the company. An emergency response officer is an employee who is trained to provide assistance to employees and guests in dangerous situations.

What does an ERO do?

A company emergency response officer (ERO) is trained to get employees and customers to safety in the event of an emergency. For example, an ERO knows how to get people out of a burning building and how to provide first aid in the event of an accident. For example, an ERO can resuscitate people and apply bandages.

Appointing company emergency responders (EROs) is a crucial step to guarantee and increase safety in an organization. An ERO is much more than just an employee; it is a specially trained person who acts as a life-saving angel in dangerous situations. Let’s delve deeper into what emergency response staff do and why they are invaluable to any organization.

the role of an ERO:

  1. provide emergency assistance: An ERO is trained to act quickly and effectively in emergency situations. Whether it concerns a fire, a medical emergency, an accident or any other form of danger, they are the first on the scene to provide assistance.
  2. Coordinate evacuation: In the event of fire or other emergencies, it is vital to evacuate the building quickly and in an orderly manner. EROs are trained to coordinate this evacuation, so that everyone can get out safely.
  3. Provide first aid: EROs are authorized to provide first aid for injuries and medical emergencies. They can perform life-saving measures such as CPR, applying bandages and providing basic care until professional help arrives.
  4. Firefighting: EROs are familiar with firefighting procedures and know how to safely extinguish small fires using fire extinguishers or other available means.
  5. Report and communicate: They play an essential role in quickly and adequately reporting emergencies to emergency services and colleagues. Good communication can save lives.
  6. Prevention and training: EROs contribute to the organization’s safety culture by helping to identify and minimize safety risks. They are also responsible for regularly training staff in safety procedures and practices.

Why Emergency Response Officers Are Crucial:

  • Quick response: In emergency situations, every second can count. EROs are on site to respond immediately and save lives before professional help arrives.
  • Safety Culture: The presence of EROs promotes a culture of safety within the organization, in which employees are aware of safety procedures and responsibilities.
  • Legal obligation: In many countries and regions it is legally required to appoint EROs, depending on the size and nature of the organization.
  • Protection of employees and guests: EROs contribute to the protection of both employees and guests, which benefits the reputation of the organization.

In essence, EROs are the silent heroes who are ready to act when the need is greatest. They are not only an asset for the safety of an organization, but also for the well-being of all those involved. Appointing and training EROs is an investment in a safe and healthy future for everyone within the organization.

Final version NEN 8112 ‘Company Emergency Response’ and the Risk Inventory & Evaluation (RI&E).

To assist employers in translating the Risk Inventory and Evaluation (RI&E) into an appropriate emergency response organization, the standardization committee for Company Emergency Response, under the leadership of the Netherlands Standardization Institute, has developed the NEN 8112 standard ‘Company Emergency Response.’ The standard was created through collaboration between trainers, consultants, government, and users.

NEN 8112 is based on a Company Emergency Response policy, endorsed by the management and periodically evaluated.

From the identified risks and the determining factors—no longer described in the law—an Emergency Response Plan (BHV-plan) is derived.

This plan serves as the basis for an Emergency Response (BHV) organization. Training, refresher courses, further education, and exercises are aimed at strengthening the BHV organization to be prepared for and remain prepared for emergencies.

The standard also provides an indication of the number of BHV officers and mentions certification as an option. This can involve the certification of individuals, BHV organizations, or an entire company or institution.”
