Workplace Safety: Ensuring Your Warehouse is as Safe as Your Office
At Vuurrood Veiligheid, we understand that safety in your warehouse is just as crucial as in your office. That’s why we provide the mandatory annual inspections and maintenance of your warehouse racking systems.
When Should You Have Your Warehouse Racking Inspected?
The obligation to have your warehouse racking inspected and maintained by an expert is outlined in the European standard NEN-EN 16635. According to this standard, safety inspections must occur at three specific times:
- After installation, relocation, or modification of the racking system.
- Following significant damage.
- Periodically, at least every 12 months.

The inspection of your warehouse racking systems is conducted in accordance with several key standards and guidelines to ensure safety and compliance. These include:
- Dutch Practice Guidelines:
- NPR 5054: 2006 – Guidelines for the safe use and inspection of racking systems.
- NPR 5055-1: 2009 – Guidelines specific to the design and use of racking systems.
- European Standards:
- NEN-EN 15620 – Tolerances, deformations, and clearances in storage systems.
- NEN-EN 15629 – Guidelines for the safe design and use of static steel racking.
- NEN-EN 15635 – Application and maintenance of storage equipment.
- Arbo Information Sheet:
- AI-14: 2000 – Guidelines on the layout, transportation, and storage in business premises.
- General Guidelines:
- General Guidelines for Assembling Pallet Racking: 2004 – Standards for the correct assembly of pallet racking systems.
- Instructions for the Safe Use of Pallet Racking Operated by Warehouse Trucks: 2004 – Safety instructions for operating racking systems with warehouse trucks.
- Occupational Health and Safety Decree (Arbeidsomstandighedenbesluit) – Dutch regulations regarding workplace safety and equipment standards.
These standards ensure that your racking systems are safe, reliable, and compliant with both national and European safety regulations.

During the inspection of your racking systems, the following key points are carefully checked:
- Presence of load signs: Ensuring that load capacity signs are visible and accurate.
- Overloading of stored goods: Checking that the racking is not overloaded beyond its design capacity.
- Damaged floors: Inspecting the floors for any damage that could compromise the stability of the racking system.
- Presence of collision protection: Verifying that appropriate collision protection is in place to prevent damage from forklifts and other vehicles.
- Coordination with mobile internal transport equipment: Ensuring that the racking is compatible with the forklifts and warehouse trucks used.
- Horizontal and vertical alignment: Checking the racks for correct alignment both horizontally and vertically.
- Deformations and rust: Inspecting the racking for any signs of structural deformations or rust that could weaken the system.
- Footplates: Ensuring that the footplates are properly installed and in good condition.
- Drop-off points: Checking designated drop-off points for safety and organization.
- Maximum pallet overhang: Verifying that pallets do not overhang the racking excessively.
- Anchoring and stability of uprights: Ensuring that the uprights are properly anchored and stable.
- Anti-fall protection in underpasses: Ensuring that proper safety measures are in place to prevent items from falling in underpasses.
- Presence of locking pins: Confirming that all locking pins are in place and secure.
If any issues requiring maintenance or repairs are identified during the inspection, we can handle the entire process for you. We will ensure that the necessary maintenance is carried out promptly, bringing your racking systems back to full operational safety.
